Bring on the Spooks

November 02, 2009 - by Jessica

SAB put on their annual Halloween party and all organizations and even groups of friends came and competed in the costume contest. There were costumes from the Teletubies, even Beatle juice made an appearance. There were costumes that could easily be found and the most intricate of costumes that you can tell people spent much time on. The people on the SAB staff put together an amazing scene, the floor even looked like real dirt, and the balloons filled the room with a Halloween ambiance. They had to of had four-hundred people show up by the end of the night, it was an amazing outcome. Hopefully more people will even show up next year, it seems to be improving every year as it grows. Way to go SAB keep up the good work, and everyone should keep going to these events because they really are a great attraction of Adelphi.

Soberfest

October 26, 2009 - by Jessica

It was alcohol awareness week here at Adelphi, and everyone got involved. All of Greek life hosted Soberfest in the UC Ballroom on the second floor. It was amazing, each sorority and fraternity put on an individual program that is usually alcohol related, and took away the alcohol to show that it is still fun and interesting without the need to get drunk. There was jell-o shots, jell-o wrestling, root beer pong, and different games and obstacle courses. All of Adelphi was invited to come out and enjoy the fun with the Greeks on campus, it was to bring the Adelphi community together, and it did, the event was a blast. My favorite was watching the jell-o wrestling because it made such a mess and they were given jumpsuits to keep their clothing clean, but that did not work in every case. Even viewers and onlookers had been hit with a splash of jell-o here and there. I hope everyone had a good time because I know how hard everyone worked to make this fun and possible. As i say, you have to get yourself out to as many events as possible; it will make your college experience unforgettable.

Homecoming!

October 13, 2009 - by Jessica

So Homecoming has come and gone once again. It feels as if it was just yesterday I was saying how excited everyone was to start the process of homecoming, but once again it has passed before our eyes. This year I went to the most events and was excited to see many fresh new faces. From the athletic events, to the spirit festival, re-dedication of Woodruff Hall and even the small car show that was held in the parking lot. It was definitely a blast. My favorite was the Spirit Festival on Saturday, I ate so much food and made many different arts and crafts to help support all the organizations on campus, even took home 2 tie-dyed t-shirts from the SAB booth. They did an amazing job getting everything set up, i know how stressful it must have been but it was definitely worth all the hard work. The great thing about homecoming is getting to see family also. Even though my family could not make it down here for the weekend events I saw many of my friends families. I got to know even more people than I did before, and create an even greater bond with Adelphi, even got to see plenty of President Robert Scott here out at all the events, that is one of the best things about him. Even though school is about our hard work and dedication, it is great to see Adelphi give some relaxing relief with a week filled with fun activities and community bonding, even Garden City residents came out to support Adelphi in our new year. I hope a lot of people took advantage of the week and look forward to the many more activities the different organizations help sponsor to move this semester right along smoothly. Also good luck on Midterms!!!

Holidays with your "Family"

April 27, 2009 - by Kayla Zaniboni So this past weekend was Easter!  There were many students that went home but I am happy to report that there were other students that were on campus as well.  Even when there was a holiday there were people on campus that were willing to make the best of the day with me.  Me and my best friend decided to get breakfast at the UC and then we went for a walk around Garden City (it’s a very safe neighborhood).  After that I decided to get a little work done.  But after work came play, when me and my closest friends went to dinner and a movie!  It was a great Easter after all.  Even though I wasn’t with my real family, I was with my Adelphi family!

How is the food at Adelphi!?

April 09, 2009 - by Kayla Zaniboni

So you may be wondering what the food is like here at Adelphi! Well I will be the first to tell you that it's not too shabby. We have two cafeterias' here on campus one is in our University Center and another in Post hall. In the UC there is something for everyone. There is a salad bar and a fruit bar. There is also a Deli and a Grill. We also have a station that switches up its food every day; it is usually pasta, some sort of meat and steamed vegetables. In Post there is the Panther Grill, which serves Quesadillas, Chicken Fingers, Mozzarella Sticks, and all types of breakfast foods all day long. Also in Post there is a Sbarros Pizza! There are three different types of meal plans: 1100, 1400, and 1600. I am so happy that there is good food here at Adelphi...I don't know what I would do otherwise!

April Showers Bring May Flowers

April 07, 2009 - by Fara Fiore

The beginning of April has been an incredibly hectic one, and the rain has not made it any easier! This past week was full of events and even the beginning of my first Kaplan LSAT course.

In the beginning of the week my sorority hosted our first annual Rock-A-Thon. Our philanthropy is the National Kidney Foundation and one of our major events involves rocking in rocking chairs. It is definitely unusual, but caused a lot of passer-bys to stop and check it out. For 24 hours, sisters are sponsored by individuals and even companies to rock in the rocking chairs, some sisters even going 24 hours straight! The count of how much we raised isn't even done yet, but so far it is well over 3,000 dollars. Although it rained, this did not stop us!

My first course in Kaplan was a diagnostic exam so I can track my progress throughout the course. This was my second diagnostic, but I have yet to really practice for the LSAT. This course has offered me so much already, and it has barely started. I have practice exams, questions, and unlimited online resources. Countdown to the actual LSAT: 63 days.

The rain has not stopped the Adelphi Campus. Programs still go on and the campus still is busy!

Spring is Here

April 03, 2009 - by Kayla Zaniboni Well its really feels like spring!! Especially here at Adelphi because tickets for the spring concert went on sale this week! All outside guest need to be at least 18 years old! It makes me so excited that Adelphi is throwing such a GREAT show!!

Powder Puff Football!!

March 30, 2009 - by Fara Fiore

It's the first week back since Spring Break and the work is definitely piling up for me. All the classes I didn't have midterms in before Spring Break, I now have midterms in. Preparing for these while preparing for Initiation in my sorority was difficult this week. Fortunately, Student Government Association planned an event called Powder Puff Football for the end of the week. This was a huge stress reliever for me! If you don't already know, powder puff football is when the girls play football and the guys either coach or cheer on the sidelines. We had many different people from different organizations come to help out. A lot of the guys form the fraternities came to cheer us on as well as help us out. My position was blocking our quarterback, since I can't throw or catch! Student Government has been puttin on events all month for Women's History Month. Many speakers have come as well as fun activities planned, such as the powder puff game. Although my team lost, it was still fun to have something to do on campus that wasn't work or stress related. A great accomplishment that I am proud to be able to talk about is the Initiation of our new members into Phi Sigma Sigma this week. Being a new sorority, it was the first time we were able to go through this ceremony and put it on ourselves! I am extremely proud of our girls and can not wait to see what they bring in the future!

What some of Adelphi's best did on Spring Break!

March 25, 2009 - by Kayla Zaniboni

While most college students go to Mexico or Florida on Spring Break a group of exceptional students from Adelphi went to Costa Rica to learn about the culture and even a little bit about themselves. Through a program called "The Alternate Spring Break" they planned a trip to Costa Rica where they helped build homes for some of the citizens there. They also had the joy of playing with the local children and were so happy to see smiles of their faces. The students that went came back feeling very grateful for what they had and very appreciative to Adelphi for giving them this experience!

Back At It...

March 23, 2009 - by Fara Fiore

Spring Break was well needed, but it's the Sunday before classes start again and I'm already getting back in the routine. Women's Recognition Month is still going on and one of my favorite events is coming up this week, Powder Puff Football. This is when the girls play football and the guys cheer them on. The guys are even going to perform a half-time dance, which I'm particularly excited for. Student Government also has speakers and events planned for almost everyday, including a self-defense class where women and man can learn some basic skills to protect themselves against attackers. Being a Junior means I have a lot of decisions to make. Especially considering I want to go to law school. I recently enrolled in one of Kaplan's courses, which I get 20% off just for being an Adelphi student. I also officially enrolled to take the LSAT, which I will be taking on June 8th. This is a very exciting but also nervous time for me. I can't wait to see how it all turns out!

Adelphi's own Broadway....

March 16, 2009 - by Kayla Zaniboni

This past week Adelphi's performing arts department of theater put on "Moonchildren" by Michael Weller. The show featured all the current students of Adelphi. All actors where fabulous and made me so proud to be a student at Adelphi. The show took place in the 1960's during the Vietnam War. It was so exciting to see because for the most part the actors where playing characters that were in the same place as they are now. The show was so relevant to today with the issues they were expressing. It showed the relationship between friends and how it has its ups and downs. It always expressed how scary it can be when college is over and you're forced in the "real world" and how that can be very over whelming. I was so happy to see how supportive the Adelphi community was. There were a number of professors that had come to see it as well as a great amount of students. Maybe one day we will be seeing one of our own Adelphi actors on the "Big Screen" or even on Broadway.

Snow Day!

March 03, 2009 - by Fara Fiore

This week at Adelphi was the All Greek Volleyball Tournament. Each organization played against each other for the chance to win a certain amount of the profits donated to a philanthropy of their choice. The whole gym was rented out for a good cause and everyone had a lot of fun! The best part about our week was the snow day. The entire Adelphi campus was shut down, except for the University Center so we were still able to get food. All of my friends had off from classes with me as well as work. We lounged, watched movies, ordered food, and ate snacks all day long. It was a lot of fun to be off with everyone knowing that there was nothing else we had to do. Tomorrow starts reality again, but the snow day was a nice little relaxation day everyone to be together.

Fun at Adelphi

February 25, 2009 - by Fara Fiore

This week was freezing at Adelphi, but we all found ways to still have fun and stay warm, On Saturday, there was a double header for the men and women's basketball team. This was a Think Pink Event, so there was a group of breast cancer survivors who were invited to come to the middle and received an appreciation award for their resilience in their battle against breast cancer. Almost all my friends came to not only cheer on our basketball teams, but also to show support for the dance and cheer leading teams, who always perform for the crowd during half-time. This week was also the Oscars, so me and my friends in New Hall decided to get together and have an Oscar party! A couple of my friends cooked in the kitchen in New, while the rest of us hung out in the lounge attached to it. This was a perfect Sunday night thing to do. We all got to hang out together and watch the Oscars with the closest to home cooking we can get!

No Matter Which Way You Go, We're All Greek Together!

February 16, 2009 - by Fara Fiore

It is recruitment week at Adelphi University, and while Greek Pride can always be seen from various organizations, it is especially prevalent on campus this week. Being a proud member of a sorority, it always makes me happy to walk into the University Center and see a sea of letters floating around, each representing their own organization with pride. Various events and parties are set up on campus to give every NPC organization the chance to show the new girls who they are, what they stand for, and why being a part of that organization means so much to them. The sororities represented on campus under National Panhellenic Council are Delta Gamma, Tri Delta, Sigma Delta Tau, Alpha Epsilon Phi, and Phi Sigma Sigma. Some other sororities include Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, and Sigma Lambda Upsilon. Some fraternities recognized at Adelphi University are Zeta Beta Tau, Kappa Sigma, and Phi Sigma Kappa. No matter which way you go, going Greek is an amazing way to get involved on campus and meet new people! Being Greek together is what going through this period is all about. This week for me has been a hectic one, as I'm sure anyone who has been through the process will tell you, but also a rewarding one. When you walk into a room, they say you just get a feeling as to where you belong and who will be the best fit for you, and I believe this to be true. However, no matter which way you go, we're all Greek together!

What's It Like to Have a Roommate?

February 16, 2009 - by Kayla Zaniboni

College is full of a whole lot of new experiences, some good and others take some time to get used to. One experience that I was also worried about was having to live with another person, or sometimes two other people. When I was a freshman I was placed in a forced triple, which means I was put into a room made for two people but there were three people in it. When I was first found this out, I was really nervous because I couldn't even imagine living with one other person, never mind two. When it came time for move in day, we set up the room so there was as much space as possible, and it didn't look half bad! One of the most frequently asked questions that I get as a tour guide is, is it hard to live with two other people? And what I always tell them is that you are never in the room at the same time, except to sleep. We were all on different class schedules and all doing different things at night. One of the great things about living with two people your freshman year is it gives you the opportunity to meet more people through your roommates. I am still friends with my roommates from my first year at Adelphi, and friends with some of their friends. Having a roommate is a wonderful experience and I have great memories from all my roommates here at Adelphi!

Fara Fiore.

My name is Fara Fiore and I am a junior at Adelphi University. I am a political science and criminal justice major, and hope to some day be a lawyer. Throughout my three years at Adelphi, I have been part of the Pre-law Society, Amnesty International, Hall Council, Phi Sigma Sigma, and Student Government. I also love when intramural basketball starts! I started as a political science major and took a criminal justice class as a general education requirement, and loved it! I immediately asked for assistance in declaring a double major, and my professors and advisors were extremely helpful in making sure everything worked out. My favorite thing to say on tours is "Everything is what you make of it," and college is no different. As a resident or commuter student, it is extremely easy to get involved, making you never want to leave Adelphi.

My name is Jessica Iuteri, I am from a small town in Connecticut. I am a sophomore Nursing major and an Excel Mentor at Adelphi. It has been an amazing adventure so far for me, leaving my family was one of the hardest things to do but I knew that by moving away it would help me grow as a person and I have even developed my very own home away from home now. I have even gained sisters, I am apart of Phi Sigma Sigma on campus and it has been a life changing experience I would never regret. I was never one to jump into anything quickly but as I moved into the college life, away from everything and everyone I knew and loved, I quickly learned that college is going to be what I make of it, its not what Adelphi can do for me, it is what I take from Adelphi and make from it. “For once jump in with you eyes closed and be faithful things will turn out just fine,” something I have started to live by. Where I end up one day will hopefully be somewhere warm and working in a hospital, helping everyone that I can and being positive about tomorrow. That’s all you can do, Live for today.

Kayla Zaniboni.

My name is Kayla Zaniboni and I am a junior at Adelphi University. I am a theatre major with a concentration in acting. Throughout my three years here at Adelphi, I have been apart of SAB (Student Activities Board) and Hall Council. I also like to play intramural volleyball. Within the theatre department, I have been involved in many shows including, "The Rimers of Eldritch", "Rent", and "Stage Door." I have enjoyed everyday at Adelphi. Even though it sounds cliché, college is what you make of it; if you put your hand out, there will be another one reaching out for you. The professors at Adelphi are more than just teachers--they end up being role models and sometimes friends. I couldn't imagine being any place else but here.
