Spring Break

March 14, 2010 - by Jessica

It has come once again; time to leave the Adelphi campus for a little break. Some good old R&R! As I’ll be heading home, others will be vacationing to resorts and beaches getting nice and tan before spring. Others though chose the alternative spring break. Adelphi offers every year an alternative spring break where you can do some good for your vacation and help others. This year people went to either the Dominican Republic or Costa Rica to offer a lending hand. According to the Adelphi website the LGS Alternative Spring Break in the Dominican Republic was set up as a collaborative undertaking with the Orphanage and Outreach that has extensive experience in offering various community-based and service-oriented short and long term programs in Monte Cristi, Dominican Republic, to help orphaned, abandoned, and disadvantaged children. Then there is the trip to Costa Rica which two students had written about on the Adelphi website under Costa Rica. To get a good idea of what went on over there, one of the students who went said, "Our tasks over the next few days included building basic bunk beds for the neediest families, doing workshops with the children in the two centers Gale ran, building a road within the community, and painting a mural to send a message to the kids."

I wish I chose to do this for my spring break, I am considering doing it next year because it sounds like an amazing experience that you could never forget. The feeling of helping someone is none like any other, you get that tingly feeling and you know you did well. Even though just being home sounds like a relaxing time, or laying on the beach sounds like fun, I think that the people who chose to do these alternative spring breaks are going to leave with plenty of memories and a great experience. I can't wait for them to come back so I can hear about the things they did, and the people they helped. If you want to find out more you can visit the Adelphi website and search alternative spring break under LGS.

Travel & Learn

March 04, 2010 - by Jessica

Friends come and go, you support them either way. Last night i said goodbye to one of my co-workers and friends as she packed up for her student teaching experience in Ireland. She chose to "study abroad" through the Adelphi University study abroad program. She is getting the chance to student teach in one of Irelands schools for Adolescent Education. It was sad as the entire student worker office in the Admissions Department met up at a local restaurant for a relaxing night, and some random singing. As we said our last good-byes it was sad to hear that she was going home to finish packing and leaving today for her semester abroad. I could not be happier for her because it is an amazing experience and I know she will have an amazing semester. As i said my good-byes I realized Adelphi offers such great ideas for studying abroad. I mean who would think to student teach abroad. I wish I had the courage to go do some nursing abroad. If you are a student that is interested in studying abroad you should contact The Center for International Education. There is more information on the Adelphi website; also there is a letter from the Director, Kraig Walkup. As the website gives you more detail you can choose to study in one or more countries around the world in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, New Zealand, North and South America. So for once if you are interested....take the chance! It sounds like an amazing experience. Even though you get sad when friends come and go, in and out of your life, you support them and I would support you if you chose to try this out. Do it for yourself! Good luck and i hope someone decided to Travel & Learn, Bon Voyage!

Accepted Student Day!

February 26, 2010 - by Jessica Mark the date...do you have your pen and paper? Are you ready? OK...March 6th! It's almost here, Accepted Students Day! It does not come around too often, only a few times a year. All students who were accepted now for Fall 2010 have the opportunity to get there final look at Adelphi before making their final decision. Accepted Student Day was what made me choose Adelphi over all of my other schools. When i walked onto the campus i felt very welcomed, with signs pointing me toward the correct building. The first thing you see is a room filled with maroon polos, even though they are brown now, those are the tour guides. In front of the tour guides are two or three counselors prepared to sign you in and direct you toward the next tour guide, ready to leave with a microphone in hand, ready to give you an amazing insight to a day at Adelphi. If you are coming for Accepted Student...which i hope a lot of perspective students are, i hope you enjoy the new buildings and how gorgeous the campus and landscaping is here, it makes me love being here more and more especially in the spring. Relax, enjoy the scenery and take in as much information as you can, most of all ASK QUESTIONS! that is what a tour guide and counselors are for, whatever a tour guide can't answer they will find the answer for you. The goal is to not leave with anymore questions, leave with all your information, and hopefully feeling like you made your college decision, to come to Adelphi University. For transfers i hope you can enjoy and for freshman i hope to see you as the new class of 2014.

Weekends?

February 18, 2010 - by Jessica

The biggest question I have noticed lately on tours is, "Is there anything to do on the weekends?" My answer to that is YES! Ideas to do over the weekend may not come knocking on your door but if you take the time to make the best of your life in college, you will definitely have something to do on the weekends. My favorite thing is to go into the city. it does not cost much, $13.00 round trip from Nassau Boulevard to Penn Station and you can do whatever your little heart desires. My favorite place to visit is the South Street Seaport and I am even going to visit the Tim Burton exhibit at the MoMa soon and go to the MET asap. Even if you are not much of the city walker the Roosevelt Field Mall is only 10 minutes away, and if you do not have a car you can take the Adelphi shuttle bus, it runs on a schedule so you can get picked up and dropped off no problem. I have been at Adelphi for almost two years now and I do not go home every weekend. I live around two hours away, it is not too bad of a drive but I choose to spend my time here and finding things to do, I have had a blast. Even attending the weekend sporting events on campus or the RA sponsored events in the resident halls are fun, I am always doing something, except for homework...OOPS!(sorry mom) I hope everyone else is taking the opportunities that I have been because college has been a blast so far. Now I am looking for more places to visit and things to do, i want to check a few more things off my list of things to do before the semester is over, like go back to Jones Beach (when its warmer!). I can't wait for spring! Have fun in college and don’t blink because it may go by faster than you think.

And so it SNOWS!

February 12, 2010 - by Jessica

Adelphi gave us a great gift this week, A SNOW DAY! Tuesday night rolled around and the threat of the 10-18 inches scared the campus. By 9 o'clock that Tuesday night i got my message one alert text that Adelphi offers to all students, telling me that on February 10th all classes are canceled and the campus is closed. The moment the text was sent out, the resident halls echoed with excitement. After shutting off my alarm clock and resting in bed i woke up the next morning to a good foot of snow and it looked like it was still coming down pretty hard. I can see residents from my window down in the Quad between Earle Hall and Waldo Hall making forts for a large snowball fight, and plenty of big snowmen. The campus was filled with the residents running around in five pairs of pants, rain boots, three jackets and gloves. Even those who were sick ran amongst the snow and caused a little havoc with their friends. By the time 8 o'clock rolled around the residents started to pile back into the buildings. One RA was baking cookies for a quick program and I chose to do hot chocolate with the residents for my program at 9pm. The day was a huge success. Some did work they were slacking on, some frolicked in the freezing cold, and others joined in the lounge for relaxation with cookies and hot chocolate. Even though we may not see another day like this for the rest of the semester, it was fun while it lasted. It brought residents together and now that I walk to class again in the freezing cold, I laugh as I see the tipped over snowmen and the remaining of what once was a huge snowball war. I enjoyed the day, got to relax and try and get over this cold of mine, but I now sit back in class and pray I pass my next test.

It's the Greek Time of the Year

February 05, 2010 - by Jessica

Come one come all, boy, girl, it has come once again! Last night February 4, was the Spring Greek Expo. Both Panhelenic sororities and fraternities came together with non panhelenic social fellowships, sororities and fraternities to show off their Greek unity and what their organization had to offer. Freshman, sophomore, juniors, and maybe a few seniors came to checkout what made each organization special. Some will choose recruitment is right for them, which is starting next Thursday February 11, others will say they did not feel they found there fit. Last night was filled of music, laughter, and plenty of Greek letters, but one thing the panhelenic sororities did do which was nice to see was be unified. All the panhelenic sororities wore the same t-shirt provided by the Inner Greek Council (IGC) and found there own little way to specify which organization they were, for example Phi Sigma Sigma wore zebra ribbon on their wrists and Alpha Epsilon Phi wore little bows in there hair. It was nice that the potential new members also known as PNM's were able to not just walk up to one table because that was "the one" but they got to experience every table because thy needed to get through the sea of girls to see which table they were standing at. Greek unity is one thing Adelphi strives for, and hopefully through another year of recruitment we will see that unity and a greater bond between all Greek organizations. One thing that is good about recruitment is that if you go through that first day of recruitment or even the second day, and you are not feeling connections with any of the organizations, then you can just leave, you are not bound there by any means. So if you want to take a chance and try it then feel free, but if not you don't need to. Make college an experience; smile as much as you can, and if you get the opportunity Go Greek. Welcome back to another spring semester at Adelphi University!

First Week

January 26, 2010 - by Jessica

Students have returned! Once again the UC is packed at lunch, classrooms are buzzing with knowledge and the offices are filled with students eager to make money which they lost over break. It’s a yearly cycle that everyone looks forward to. You return to the classroom with new books in hand, and those new nursing students still have the creases in their new scrubs, that won’t last long. It is another semester closer to graduation, as we lose some great students in May the University will gain even more freshman and transfer students in the fall. Still it is a weight lifted off our shoulders as we have gotten into the classes we wanted, and even though there may be a few we wish we could attend we deal with what we have and we get determined to pass the system and strive for that 4.0 GPA. So as this first week has just begun, the only thing I can say is good luck, and strive for excellence.

The FINAL Stretch

December 14, 2009 - by Jessica

The last week of the semester has come upon us and everyone is feeling the pressure. Those late night study sessions, ten coffee runs, unhealthy snacking, and bloodshot eyes have become the fad for the week. As we are crunching in our last minute studying and getting little to no sleep, we are preparing ourselves for the semester to come to a close and our term grades to be posted on CLASS. We will even be saying goodbye to some of our friends as they graduate early or finish classes and move on to student teaching, those bigger and better things that do not include sitting in a classroom. So now that the textbooks that some of us have not yet opened once this semester have been creased and scanned, we pray for the best and even those who are struggling to pass with this one last chance are getting serious. It has been a good semester and i wish everyone with the bestest luck and to study hard, because lets just hope that everyone gets to finish off this semester on a good foot and looking forward to the next. Good luck and have a great break!

The Carols have Begun

December 07, 2009 - by Jessica

This week CSI, Center for Student Involvement, had its yearly holiday party. You could get your picture taken with Santa and his two elves, or even with the menorah and the picture would then be put in a snow globe and it was a nice trinket to keep around your room after. You could also see all of the gingerbread houses that were done for the contest, make a holiday card, or even decorate an ornament with different paints and sparkles. Even Lackman made amazing food for the event and a chocolate fountain sat in the middle of the room where everyone got the chance to dip fruits and candies in the chocolate for the sweets tooth’s out there. It was a great experience where all of Adelphi came together both commuters and residents to appreciate what Adelphi can offer and allow the students to come and relax for a night.

Time to be Thankful

November 24, 2009 - by Jessica

Watching suitcases wheel themselves out of the residents halls with car keys and flight tickets in hand, that’s right everyone is getting ready to retreat back to there home and spend time with their family. Thanksgiving clears out the campus but for some international students and those who chose or can not return home for the holiday are within the residents halls, or even visiting friend's families just to get away. It's an amazing time of year that comes where you can sit around a table with friends, family, or even other residents. As we gather and tell our thanks to families, we realize how much we have been given even at Adelphi. It is just one of those things you never want to take for granted. We know as we return from our well needed break, finals are right around the corner and everyone will be re-packing for the winter break and heading home prepared for spring semester. But hold onto your hats and get ready for the storm because here comes finals. Good Luck to all and Have a great Holiday!

Sold to the Highest Bidder

November 16, 2009 - by Jessica The Tri Delta Bachelor Auction was last Friday. Tri Delta raised money to help donate money towards their philanthropy, the St. Judes Children Hospital. Both residents and commuters were invited to see both boys from Adelphi and other Universities auction themselves off, with the choice of a date after to help raise money and help Tri Delta achieve the amount of money they wanted to send into St. Judes to help aid in funds for research. Everyone shared food, fun, and laughter as we watched these boys strut their stuff own the runway in the efforts to aid in the fight for research/ Thanks to all who participated and alos those who attended it showed how strong Adelphi is as a community and also how much fun we can have in raising money for a cause.

Fall has Arrived

November 13, 2009 - by Jessica

It has finally happened, we turned back the clocks and the sun has begun to set earlier. Our days are shorter and the air is colder. I get out of work around 6 most days and out of class by 4 on others. By the time I am ready to return to my dorm the campus has gotten quieter and much darker. Luckily Adelphi has plenty of lighting on the pathways and Public safety is always making there way around, and if we are not feeling safe as the nights start earlier we have our blue light posts set up all over campus where public safety will respond if we ever feel un-safe and escort us back to our residents hall or our car, that is a huge help. I hope everyone loves fall like I do, and don’t fall into the blues as winter is not far away, I’m going to stay focused and keep involved.

Bring on the Spooks

November 02, 2009 - by Jessica

SAB put on their annual Halloween party and all organizations and even groups of friends came and competed in the costume contest. There were costumes from the Teletubies, even Beatle juice made an appearance. There were costumes that could easily be found and the most intricate of costumes that you can tell people spent much time on. The people on the SAB staff put together an amazing scene, the floor even looked like real dirt, and the balloons filled the room with a Halloween ambiance. They had to of had four-hundred people show up by the end of the night, it was an amazing outcome. Hopefully more people will even show up next year, it seems to be improving every year as it grows. Way to go SAB keep up the good work, and everyone should keep going to these events because they really are a great attraction of Adelphi.

Soberfest

October 26, 2009 - by Jessica

It was alcohol awareness week here at Adelphi, and everyone got involved. All of Greek life hosted Soberfest in the UC Ballroom on the second floor. It was amazing, each sorority and fraternity put on an individual program that is usually alcohol related, and took away the alcohol to show that it is still fun and interesting without the need to get drunk. There was jell-o shots, jell-o wrestling, root beer pong, and different games and obstacle courses. All of Adelphi was invited to come out and enjoy the fun with the Greeks on campus, it was to bring the Adelphi community together, and it did, the event was a blast. My favorite was watching the jell-o wrestling because it made such a mess and they were given jumpsuits to keep their clothing clean, but that did not work in every case. Even viewers and onlookers had been hit with a splash of jell-o here and there. I hope everyone had a good time because I know how hard everyone worked to make this fun and possible. As i say, you have to get yourself out to as many events as possible; it will make your college experience unforgettable.

Homecoming!

October 13, 2009 - by Jessica

So Homecoming has come and gone once again. It feels as if it was just yesterday I was saying how excited everyone was to start the process of homecoming, but once again it has passed before our eyes. This year I went to the most events and was excited to see many fresh new faces. From the athletic events, to the spirit festival, re-dedication of Woodruff Hall and even the small car show that was held in the parking lot. It was definitely a blast. My favorite was the Spirit Festival on Saturday, I ate so much food and made many different arts and crafts to help support all the organizations on campus, even took home 2 tie-dyed t-shirts from the SAB booth. They did an amazing job getting everything set up, i know how stressful it must have been but it was definitely worth all the hard work. The great thing about homecoming is getting to see family also. Even though my family could not make it down here for the weekend events I saw many of my friends families. I got to know even more people than I did before, and create an even greater bond with Adelphi, even got to see plenty of President Robert Scott here out at all the events, that is one of the best things about him. Even though school is about our hard work and dedication, it is great to see Adelphi give some relaxing relief with a week filled with fun activities and community bonding, even Garden City residents came out to support Adelphi in our new year. I hope a lot of people took advantage of the week and look forward to the many more activities the different organizations help sponsor to move this semester right along smoothly. Also good luck on Midterms!!!

About the Author

Admissions Unveiled is written by
Jessica Iuteri.

My name is Jessica Iuteri, I am from a small town in Connecticut. I am a sophomore Nursing major and an Excel Mentor at Adelphi. It has been an amazing adventure so far for me, leaving my family was one of the hardest things to do but I knew that by moving away it would help me grow as a person and I have even developed my very own home away from home now. I have even gained sisters, I am apart of Phi Sigma Sigma on campus and it has been a life changing experience I would never regret. I was never one to jump into anything quickly but as I moved into the college life, away from everything and everyone I knew and loved, I quickly learned that college is going to be what I make of it, its not what Adelphi can do for me, it is what I take from Adelphi and make from it. “For once jump in with you eyes closed and be faithful things will turn out just fine,” something I have started to live by. Where I end up one day will hopefully be somewhere warm and working in a hospital, helping everyone that I can and being positive about tomorrow. That’s all you can do, Live for today.
