Leading The Way

The Final Frenzy!

May 09, 2012 - by Lauren

The end is finally near! Spring semester is almost over and everyone’s favorite time of the year is so close – summer! Now that we all have officially ended classes and we are just a few short days away from our final exams, everyone is busy studying and writing final papers. It is stressful trying to fit in time to study for all my tests; I know that if I just focus and take a deep breath finals will be over before I know it.

It is a relief knowing that Swirbull library is open 24/7 during finals week because many of us literally tend to hibernate here. The library is hopping, but it is a great place to be productive. Everyone has their own study habits either studying with a group of classmates or on their own. I know for me being in a quiet space with no distractions helps. The most important thing to remember is to stay organized and take occasional breaks in order to retain everything you study.

Even though classes are practically over, summer is still a great chance to begin your college search, especially high school juniors. There will be several Information Sessions running in both June and August. Our tour guides look forward to returning to campus to show those attending our favorite places! Register on the Adelphi Website under Admissions Events for these great days at Adelphi and can’t wait to see you all there! I know that our hard work will soon pay off! Good luck on finals everyone and congratulations to all Adelphi graduating seniors!

Spring Open House!

April 25, 2012 - by Lauren

Just a reminder that this Sunday, April 29, 2012 is Adelphi’s Spring Open House! The big event is from 10am to 1:30pm at the Sports and Recreation Center. If students have either not attended our recent two Accepted Student Days or simply starting their college search early, this is a great opportunity to learn more about all that Adelphi has to offer! Campus tours will be going out about every 15 to 20 minutes, with the last tour departing at 1:30pm. Everyone will get to see all the usual hotspots of campus including Swirbull Library, Post Dining Hall, Sports and Recreation Center, a classroom as well as a Residence Hall and a typical student room. After the tour, all tour guides will bring the families to Adelphi’s University Center to check out the different workshop sessions. In between 11am and 1:30pm sessions regarding Admissions, Honors College, Levermore Global Scholars Program, Learning Disabilities Program, Study Abroad, Joint Degree Programs and Adelphi’s Center for Career Development will be taking place. Other services will be going on regarding student life and affairs as well as meeting Adelphi faculty representing our different Schools and departments.

On a tour, students are able to become familiar with Adelphi through an actual student and ask questions on a more personal level. As a tour guide, I always enjoy bonding with these curious students and showing them this incredible university through my eyes. Best of all, Adelphi’s campus during the spring is in full bloom! As you can see, an Open House is a great experience and I strongly encourage everyone to attend in order to get all the information you need! Register on the Adelphi Website under Admissions Events for this great day at Adelphi and hope to see you all there!

Accepted Student Day #2!

April 17, 2012 - by Lauren

Adelphi’s second spring Accepted Student Day is this Sunday, April 22 2012 at 11am! Our last Accepted Student Day was successful for all who attended and I am looking forward to that same positive energy at the event, just a few short days away! There is not much time left to make your college decision as the May 1 deadline is fast approaching. However, for anyone who is still unsure about making the right choice, attending this event is your best option to gaining last minute insight about Adelphi.

Similar to last time, all of Adelphi is coming out again to be there for our accepted students and provide all the answers to those important and final questions. Student Financial Services, Admissions, Residential Life and Housing, Academic Receptions and much more will all be present again during the day. Everyone still has the opportunity to find out more information regarding student life, activities, commuter affairs, residential life, athletics, music, etc. As a tour guide, I still believe the most fun happens when going out for your tour! Tours of Adelphi’s campus will be going out about every 15 minutes, starting at the CRS (Center for Recreation and Sports). Also before we go out to see the university, tour groups will also be receiving the usual warm welcome from the Executive Director of the Center for Career Development, Tom Ward. The tour does take about an hour and is the best chance for accepted students to ask current Adelphi students themselves anything regarding concerns about the college experience.

I still remember how attending Accepted Student Day with my family just one year ago was the day that made all the difference in my mind and from there on out, proudly being able to say that my new home was going to be at Adelphi! Accepted students, let’s hope this beautiful weather holds out for Sunday and I cannot wait to see you all soon!

Time's Flying...

April 03, 2012 - by Lauren

It’s finally April! Everyone is now in the home stretch, working hard to soon finish the semester and planning their schedules for fall registration! Even though high schools now have their Spring Break either this week or next week and get to enjoy their time off, it is still a regular school and work week for college students. With less than a month away we are approaching the deadline for all accepted students to making their college decision! This break is the time to gather all your thoughts and questions, and make sure they answered in order to make the final choice! Take advantage of this week to visit or visit again while normal campus activities and classes are in session. Making sure you can envision yourself at your potential college and walking around to get a feel of campus is the best method to narrowing down your college options.

As a Tour Guide, I have especially noticed how Adelphi University has become extremely busy with accepted students and their families, and will continue until everyone makes their decision! It has been great to see these accepted students, from both near and far, come to visit and take a tour of the campus. Having heard about the abundance of tours and visits for students scheduled has begun my week on a great note! I enjoy taking a break in between classes to come to Admissions and be able to share my home and passion for Adelphi with students in the mist of their college decision! Only less than a year ago I was in your same exact shoes and understand how hectic this time of the year can be! However, every tour guide is here to help our accepted students and ease the stress of making the best college decision!

Please take a look at the Adelphi University Admissions Events for Prospective College Students page on our website to still register for both Accepted Students Day and Adelphi’s Spring Open House! Don’t forget to call 516-877-3050 to schedule a personal tour with an Adelphi Tour Guide, which runs Monday-Friday at 11am and 3pm!

Calling All Accepted Students!

March 20, 2012 - by Lauren

Adelphi’s first spring Accepted Student Day is this Saturday, March 24 2012 at 11am-1:30pm! In  just one year, I cannot believe how far I have come since my Accepted Student Day. As a tour guide, I am looking forward to meeting all the accepted freshmen and to help them in their college decision in any way possible by attending this great event! It will be exciting to show accepted students my new home at Adelphi and hopefully the weather will be in our favor.

This day is the perfect opportunity for every family because all of Adelphi is coming out to help answer every pressing question. Student Financial Services, Admissions, Residential Life and Housing, Academic Receptions and many more departments will all be present throughout the day to be there for every accepted student attending. Everyone will be able to learn more about student life, activities, commuter affairs, residential life, athletics, and much more!

The best part of this day is the campus tours, which is where I will be helping you specifically. Tours of the Adelphi campus will begin at 10am and ongoing about every 15 minutes, starting at the Center for Recreation and Sports. Also, before we go out to see the university, tour groups will all receive a warm welcome from Thomas Ward, the Executive Director of the Center for Career Development. Tours usually last around an hour and is the best chance for accepted students to ask current Adelphi students themselves their questions or concerns about the college experience.

Attending Accepted Student Day and taking a campus tour will allow each accepted student to envision how they will get acclimated into the Adelphi atmosphere and learn about the incredible programs and opportunities that the university offers. After going to Accepted Student Day with my family last year, speaking with an Admissions Counselor and touring around the school solidified my decision that this was right the right place for me. You can still register online and check out the schedule for the day. Accepted students, get ready for this wonderful event and hope to see you all there!

Spring Fever!

March 08, 2012 - by Lauren

What gorgeous weather we had today! The sun and that classic spring afternoon put everyone in a great mood! Tomorrow is our last day of classes before Spring Break and everyone is looking forward to enjoying their week off with friends and family! Many students had midterms this week and the thought that we are halfway through the spring semester is unbelievable! I know I am excited to be visiting some family during this week off and continue keeping on top of school work.

It has been really great to see all the positive energy and excitement in my recent tours! Personally, being able to let others experience a typical day of college and learn more about the programs and special events that Adelphi offers is the best part! On a tour, a prospective student is able to become familiar with their potential college campus with an actual student and ask questions on a more personal level. As a tour guide, I enjoy bonding with the families and students I bring around campus and letting them see the university through my eyes. Spring is finally here and it is the perfect opportunity to see Adelphi blossoming!

Reminder…Accepted Students Day is just around the corner! This event is taking place the first weekend after we get back from spring break, March 24th 2012 at 11am. Register on the Adelphi Website under Admissions Events for this great day at Adelphi!

Busy Busy Busy!

February 23, 2012 - by Lauren

Happy President’s Week! Even though high schools are off for the entire week, it is a normal school and work week for college students. This break is the perfect opportunity to catch up and get organized regarding your college search! Instead of reading pamphlets and looking up online all the different facts about your potential school, TAKE A TOUR! Take advantage of this week to visit or visit again while the regular campus activities and classes are in session. There is nothing better than experiencing first hand a typical day of college and learning more about the programs and special events that Adelphi has to offer!

As a Tour Guide, I have especially noticed how Adelphi University has become even more alive than ever this week! It has been great to see such huge crowds visiting and taking tours of the campus. Walking into the Admissions office this morning and hearing about the abundance of tours scheduled put a smile on my face. This made me extremely excited to show prospective students my home and help to ease the stress of making the best college decision. Personally, I am looking forward to tour guiding this Saturday at another Information Session and cannot wait to end high school students’ week off on a good note!

Don’t forget to check out the Adelphi University Admissions Events for Prospective College Students page on our website to still register for upcoming Information Sessions and Accepted Students Day! Call 516-877-3050 to schedule a personal tour with an Adelphi Tour Guide, which runs Monday-Friday at 11am and 3pm!

Back into Action!

February 09, 2012 - by Lauren

Wow! The semester has been flying by so fast; we have already almost completed our third week of school! Everyone is now back into their normal routines and embracing the start of this new semester. We have all adjusted to our new schedules, just in time for the start of tests. There have been lots of exciting things happening this week including Greek Recruitment, this weekend’s sold out Bruce Hornsby concert and an awesome Adelphi shout out in this week’s episode of Glee! I know I have been taking advantage of all I can this semester by partaking in Adelphi’s parking incentive program, going to even more campus events and catching up with old friends as well as making new ones!

Adelphi’s prospective students are slowly receiving their acceptances and faced with the big college decision! But no decision is complete without the official campus tour! Visiting campus is a great experience and the perfect chance to see the university on a weekday when classes are in session. You all have already learned lots about Adelphi University and by taking a tour, you get to step into our welcoming atmosphere to experience an afternoon at college first hand! Your tour guide will be able to answer your unanswered college questions and show you the world inside Adelphi.

Reminder…this Wednesday February 15th 2012 is our Accepted Student Online Chat from 7-9pm. This is the perfect time to get all the info you need and address all your questions in order to help you with the college search. Register on the Adelphi Website under Admissions Events for the chat as well as our upcoming Information Sessions!

Welcome Back!

January 24, 2012 - by Lauren

Hello and welcome back! Spring Semester 2012 has finally arrived! Everyone is starting new classes and reuniting with their friends, now that winter break is over. It is a new year and a new semester, so each student is on the same page and ready to begin on a good note. Balancing school work, getting involved on campus and making new friends last semester has only made me more eager to do it all again this semester! There are many exciting events to look forward to including the Spring Concert from SAB (Student Activities Board), Relay for Life, Spring Break, Graduation for seniors and of course summer!

No matter what season, taking a tour of the campus is imperative and encouraged, especially for high school seniors. The next few months are important because visiting and finding the college environment that best suits you will help make your college decision less stressful. Taking a tour at Adelphi is a great glimpse into a day in the life of a college student and envisioning how you will get acclimated to this atmosphere. It is only in a matter of time that you will know your acceptances, ultimately to decide where you will be spending the next few years earning a degree. Also a reminder, this Wednesday January 25th 2012 is our Early Action Accepted Student Online Chat from 7-9pm. This is a great opportunity to get all the info you need and address any unanswered questions in order to make a concrete decision. Do not forget to register on the Adelphi Website under Admissions Events!

It’s now time to dust off the notebooks from the shelf and gather up those Spring Semester textbooks! Welcome back and good luck to everyone!

That's A Wrap!

January 11, 2012 - by Lauren

Now that the holiday season is over and everyone was busy unwrapping their gifts, I decided it was best to wrap up my first semester at Adelphi. Beginning college was definitely a scary transition for everyone, including myself. I was unsure about juggling more difficult classes, joining clubs, my on and off-campus jobs and most importantly, making new friends! I learned that the college experience is truly what you make of it. Time management is the key to staying on top of your work and being prepared for new and upcoming assignments.

At Adelphi, the best part of campus involvement is that anyone can find something that suits their interests. With over 80 clubs and organizations on campus, I was able to quickly get involved and meet new people! As a commuter, I joined the Commuter Student Organization and was able to help run Adelphi’s Commuter Appreciation Week this semester! I was also able to continue my passion of music in college by joining the Adelphi Choir and successfully auditioning for the Adelphi Vocal Ensemble.

By far, the best opportunity of my college experience has been tour guiding. As only a small freshman with big school spirit, this has given me a chance to tell others about my new home at Adelphi and all the amazing opportunities the university has to offer! In the months to come, I look forward to opening the eyes of prospective students to hopefully see Adelphi as their new home and a place where they can grow.

The Application

December 13, 2011 - by Jessica

Our early action deadline has already approached, it was December 1st. Students who submit a completed application by December 1 will be notified of the decision of the Office of University Admissions by December 31. For all other applicants who are submitting applications, the Adelphi University Admissions office makes every effort to notify candidates of their admission decision approximately three weeks after receiving a completed application. A completed application for a freshman includes, a filled out application (either online, through commonapp, or a paper application), non-refundable application fee of $40.00, a personal statement/essay, official high school transcript, official ACT or SAT scores inclusing the writting section, & one or more recommendation letters from a guidance/college counselor, teacher or school based administrator. Letters from other sources, such as a volunteer coordinator, may also be considered.  So for students who are interested in applying these are the required pieces of the application to complete your file for consideration in being accepted into the university. Get started & Good Luck!

Good Questions

October 20, 2011 - by Jessica

Saturday is the first Open House of the fall 2011 recruitment season. If you have not signed up, please do so, it is a great opportunity to start your college search off right. The one thing that people don’t prepare for is, what should I ask at an open house? After polling the office of student workers & tour guides I have compiled a list of questions you may want to ask and never thought of asking. The top 10 questions seemed to be...

1) How much is your tuition?

2) What are your accredited programs?

3) Where will my son/daughter be living?

4) Can freshman have cars?

5) Is it easy to get involved? What kinds of clubs and organizations do you have?

6) How is the faculty?

7) Can you find a job on campus?

8) How is the food?

9) How do you schedule your classes?

10)How does my son/daughter get paired with a roommate?

There are many more questions that can be asked but you need to direct it towards yourself and the program you are interested. I hope these questions have gotten your mind going now, hope to see you Saturday!

Open House

October 07, 2011 - by Jessica

For all of you that do not know, Adelphi University is having its first Fall 2011 Open House on Saturday, October 22nd. It is the first of two for the fall so if you cannot attend the one in October we will be having another in November. What is so great about the Open House? This is your opportunity as a perspective student to get a tour of what Adelphi has to offer. This is not like our usual daily tour, this is a bit different but you get the same information just in a larger group. If you would like a smaller personalized tour you are always welcome to make an appointment Monday through Friday for an 11am tour or a 3pm tour. We are always happy to help in any way possible and answer all of your questions. What is an added bonus to the Open House though is that in our University Center we have set up different department employees to speak with you. Anywhere from housing to financial aid and some programs also. It is a great experience and i strongly encourage you start thinking about attending an Open House to get more information. This may be another great way to kick off your college search. Looking at a school and asking questions always helps out. Hope you decide to kick your search off the right way, the Adelphi Open House! If you have any questions please contact our admissions office.

Dining In

September 29, 2011 - by Jessica

The new Post Hall has opened and looks/tastes amazing! Our Adelphi website states ‘This newly renovated location features all-you-care-to-eat dining, including a deli, homestyle entrees, a grill, a salad bar, and more!” It is a great turn from our University Center. Being able to go into Post Hall and sit down with friends with real silverware and plates, no paper or plastic is being used. The change in food between meals has also been a great change in pace especially for a student who has already been here for three years, it is now a new option.

Along with the change to Post Hall it brought the change to our meal plans. As some of us had the old declining meal plan now the meal plan is called "block" plan. Even though if you are an upperclassman you do not need to change to the new meal plan but the incoming freshman must pick from the new meal plan. The new meal plans are Platinum (240 All-You-Care-to-Eat meals per semester. Average meals per week: 15. Panther Dollars: $100 + $100 bonus = $200 total &Cost per semester: $1,995) Gold (190 All-You-Care-to-Eat meals per semester. Average meals per week: 12. Panther Dollars: $150 + $100 bonus = $250 total &Cost per semester: $1,695) and Silver (130 All-You-Care-to-Eat meals per semester. Average meals per week: 8. Panther Dollars: $250 & Cost per semester: $1,395.) The incoming freshmen have to pick between the platinum and gold meal plans but can move down to the silver plan sophomore year.

I advise people to spend more time in Post Hall and try all that you can because the food is such a great change and there are many healthy options. Just keep in mind just because it is all-you-care-to-eat does not mean you need to eat until you stuff yourself like thanksgivings turkey. Bon Appétit

Step One: The Tour

September 19, 2011 - by Jessica

What is a great way to start off the fall college search? A tour of course. One great way to get the ball rolling in the fall is to make a list of the schools you really would like to see and contact each admissions office. To contact the admissions office at Adelphi University would be to call 516-877-3050 where you would be greeted by a receptionist who could help you with your call. You can even just call to ask a question or make an interview to meet with a counselor, but an interview is not required at Adelphi University. So, after you call and make an appointment for a tour which runs Monday-Friday at 11am and 3pm we schedule a tour guide to your tour. When you come on your scheduled tour day a tour guide will be waiting in the front Admissions office ready to explore what Adelphi has to offer you. Each tour guide is trained to answer questions to the best of their ability and direct any questions they cannot answer to a counselor. No matter what each question you ask gets answered by the end of the tour. You will tour around our campus and see our library, a resident’s hall, our new Post Hall with the "all you care to eat" option, the Center for Recreation and Sports, the Performing Arts Center, a classroom, and our main University Center. We hope you would leave happy with the university and that your tour guide does a fine job. When you come back to the Admissions office you will be asked to fill out a card of information regarding how your tour was. Then you will be free for the day and hopefully leaving satisfied with what you had seen. Sounds like a lot but it is really a great experience and an organized way to start off your college planning.

About the Author

Jessica Iuteri

My name is Jessica Iuteri, I am from a small town in Connecticut. I am a Nursing major and an Excel Mentor at Adelphi. It has been an amazing adventure so far for me, leaving my family was one of the hardest things to do but I knew that by moving away it would help me grow as a person and I have even developed my very own home away from home now. I have even gained sisters, I am apart of Phi Sigma Sigma on campus and it has been a life changing experience I would never regret. I was never one to jump into anything quickly but as I moved into the college life, away from everything and everyone I knew and loved, I quickly learned that college is going to be what I make of it, its not what Adelphi can do for me, it is what I take from Adelphi and make from it. “For once jump in with you eyes closed and be faithful things will turn out just fine,” something I have started to live by. Where I end up one day will hopefully be somewhere warm and working in a hospital, helping everyone that I can and being positive about tomorrow. That’s all you can do, Live for today.

Lauren Jacobson

My name is Lauren Jacobson and I am from Nassau County, here on Long Island. I am a Mathematics major in the STEP program for adolescent education, a tour guide and an active member of CSO (Commuter Student Organization). Adelphi was the perfect university for me and I am so fortunate to now be a part of this welcoming community that is so close to home. At Adelphi, there is an abundance of ways to get involved outside of the classroom and that is what has added to my college experience. As a vocalist, the Performing Arts Center is by far my favorite place to relax besides my regular chorus rehearsals! Getting involved on campus helped me stay connected and build upon interests that I wanted to continue after high school. What I love the most about Adelphi is that it has become my home away from home. Hopefully one day I will be able to pass on these experiences to my students as their teacher and bring to my classroom the same welcoming feeling I found at Adelphi.
